Worked example: a 400-page deposition into 22 exhibits
A compiled deposition transcript runs 400 pages with a top-level bookmark for each exhibit. Choose Top-level only, review the 22-row manifest to confirm every exhibit's page range looks right, and download one ZIP with 22 separately-named PDFs instead of hand-splitting the file in a PDF editor.

Does splitting need bookmarks, or can I split by fixed page ranges?
This page splits at your PDF's existing bookmarks — top-level chapters, level-2 sections, or a custom pick of any bookmark as a boundary. If your PDF has no bookmarks, add some first with the bookmark editor, or split at fixed page numbers isn't offered here yet.
What happens to pages before the first bookmark?
They're included in the first output file, from page 1 up to the page before the first split point — a cover or preface stays with whichever chapter follows it, rather than being dropped.
Is the ZIP built on a server?
No — pdf-lib splits the document and fflate zips the results, both in your browser. Nothing uploads, and the same worked example handles a 400-page file without a memory spike.
Can I rename the output files?
Pick a naming pattern — number-and-title, title only, or original-filename-and-number — applied to every file in the manifest before you export. There's no per-file rename, but the pattern covers the common cases.
